When her parents have died, author Erica Falck travels home to Fjällbacka, and she remains there. She becomes involved in a murder mystery, and meets Detective Inspector Patrik Hedström with whom she gets married and they make a family. With her help, he contributes to solving a row of cases. She is described as ‘very pretty’, and her personality is partly based on Camilla Läckberg’s own.

Reginald Wexford

Inspector Reginald “Reg” Wexford, who operates in the fictional town of Kingsmarkham in Sussex, was a traditional detective when Ruth Rendell first introduced him. He is overweight and has a foul temper, which leads to conflicts with his superiors, but he has a pleasant and understanding family. Wexford has become more tolerant over the years and has developed into a major authority on human character.

He is a middle-aged detective with the Cape Town police, is of average height with greying untidy hair, a rugged face and a Slavic appearance. Benny Griessel does, however, have problems. He boozes – which is why his wife and their two children throw him out, and he finds a new partner. In the first book she has a relationship with a farmer, Edward Risberg.
