Lindsay Gordon is a hardboiled, cynical, lesbian crime reporter and the protagonist of half a dozen novels by Val McDermid. She is a Socialist, feminist jazz lover who tries to cut down on her cigarette and whiskey consumption. Her unorthodox methods are not always appreciated, especially not by the police, but that does not stop her from continuing to harass them.

Detective Diane Fry, who features in a string of novels by Stephen Booth, is a competent investigator, but under the surface she is an insecure and vulnerable woman. She has a complicated relationship with Ben Cooper, one of her subordinates at the police station in the fictional town of Edendale in Derbyshire’s Peak District. Annika Bengtzon

Annika Bengtzon is the creation of the Swedish author and journalist Liza Marklund and possibly Sweden’s best-known journalist. She is married with two children, but she is also a highly competent crime reporter with a bad conscience on account of neglecting her family. Bengtzon is a complex woman who can be hard and tough one minute and reduced to tears the next. Nevertheless, she is portrayed as a highly capable modern professional woman.

A young – he was born in 1950 – police detective posted in Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland during the 1980s. The IRA struggles are at their worst, and Sean Patrick Duffy doesn’t have an easy time as a Catholic in the Protestant Northern Ireland, according to author Adrian McKinty. Duffy has dark, curly hair and blue eyes, is temporarily single, likes listening to classical music and has hidden a bit of hashish in his garage.
