Superintendent Judy Hammer is head of a police department in North Carolina, Virginia, where she has to deal with both city crime and stubborn islanders in a short suite of novels by Patricia Cornwell. Hammer is a middle-aged, unhappily married but very fond of her young colleague Andy Brazil, who becomes her right hand. In the books about them, realistic police work is combined with some less realistic elements.

There is a shortage of staff which means that the young, ambitious police constable Monika Pedersen gets a temporary position on the crime squad in Stockholm. She is single, likes her work, and eventually gets a permanent position. Later, she is overworked and seriously injured doing her job, and spends her free time investigating the circumstances around her mother’s death. Åsa Nilsonne has written five novels about her.

Pascoe has problems: apart from Dalziel, he also has a father who has never been able to accept that his son become a policeman instead of a farmer, and he has a wife, Ellie – they have a child together – in a marriage that is in danger of falling apart.
