Young Maureen is a human wreck: sexually abused by her father, her mother an alcoholic, her brother a drug dealer. She has spent time in a mental hospital, and started a relationship with her psychiatrist. But she is stubborn and determined, and struggles to solve the problems and crimes she comes across.

Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Geoffrey ‘Tom’ Barnaby has become internationally famous via a number of ‘whodunit’ police novels, written by Caroline Graham, but primarily thanks to the TV series <i>Midsomer Murders</i>. He is a calm, patient, methodical and conscientious police investigator in the fictive town of Causton where he lives with his wife Joyce and daughter Cully. His right-hand man is DS Gavin Troy.

Henrik ‘HP’ Pettersson’s big sister Rebecca Normén is, however, a police officer and can help him when he has got into trouble.

Norwegian author Jørn Lier Horst is a former police officer, and his main character has the same profession: William Wisting is a middle-aged police detective in Larvik. He has a big head, a sharply defined face with high cheekbones, and his hair is going grey. He has been a widower for some years, and even though he likes his job he is looking forward to retiring so he can spend more time with his daughter Line and his granddaughter Amalie.
