He is tough and quick-witted, he has a black sense of humour and a weak spot for his married partner, which makes their relationship complicated. Dennis Lehane has written a string of much acclaimed hardboiled, urban, violent police novels about the pair.

Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Geoffrey ‘Tom’ Barnaby has become internationally famous via a number of ‘whodunit’ police novels, written by Caroline Graham, but primarily thanks to the TV series <i>Midsomer Murders</i>. He is a calm, patient, methodical and conscientious police investigator in the fictive town of Causton where he lives with his wife Joyce and daughter Cully. His right-hand man is DS Gavin Troy.

Several television productions have been based on Colin Dexter’s Morse books. Martin Holmberg is a chain smoker and the central character in a police collective. He has a good relationship with his superior officers, first Bengt Thorén, later Seved Olofsson – as well as Stefan Elg and his other colleagues in the town of Himmelsholm.
