    Angela ”Angie” Gennaro is a small, dark, good looking private detective that features in novels by Dennis Lehane. She is working alongside her childhood friend Patrick Kenzie. She is a devout Catholic and therefore reluctant to leave her alcoholic, abusive husband. Kenzie and Gennaro solve crime in a string of hardboiled detective novels set in Boston.

  • Tom Barnaby

    Male

    Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Geoffrey ‘Tom’ Barnaby has become internationally famous via a number of ‘whodunit’ police novels, written by Caroline Graham, but primarily thanks to the TV series <i>Midsomer Murders</i>. He is a calm, patient, methodical and conscientious police investigator in the fictive town of Causton where he lives with his wife Joyce and daughter Cully. His right-hand man is DS Gavin Troy.

    Victoria Iphigenia Warshawski is a hardboiled private detective in Chicago. She often rescues people on the margins of society and she often she rails against crooked politicians, bigotry, and toned-down political scandals. Her father is Polish and her mother was Jewish – and she has more lovers than she has friends according to the author, Sara Paretsky.

  • George Smiley

    Male

    He is rather fat, has been said to liken a toad, and is married to the beautiful and forever unfaithful Lady Ann Sercombe. Besides which, George Smiley is a lethal agent with the British Secret Service in a suite of novels by John Le Carré. Before retiring, he also becomes the director of the secret service. In some of the early books, he is however more active as a detective.
