But he is well aware of the city’s less savoury sides, and the memory of crimes he has investigated has meant that he chain-smokes and also drinks too much – which greatly upsets his Muslim wife Fatma. Together the couple have a lot of children and the number steadily grows in Barbara Nadel’s books about him.

Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Geoffrey ‘Tom’ Barnaby has become internationally famous via a number of ‘whodunit’ police novels, written by Caroline Graham, but primarily thanks to the TV series <i>Midsomer Murders</i>. He is a calm, patient, methodical and conscientious police investigator in the fictive town of Causton where he lives with his wife Joyce and daughter Cully. His right-hand man is DS Gavin Troy.

Aurelio Zen

Detective Inspector Zen is a loner based in Rome, but he solves crime all over Italy. He may seem clumsy, but his determination and laissez-faire attitude to police protocol means that he is both successful and unpopular with his superiors. Aurelio Zen featured in one book by the British author Michael Dibdin, but he became so popular that Dibdin wrote another ten about him.

Andy Brazil

When he appears for the first time, Andrew ”Andy” Brazil is 22 years old and an up and coming news reporter working with the police. In the second book he has been promoted to state trooper working closely together with the middle-aged chief of police, Judy Hammer. The books by the American author Patricia Cornwell are set in North Carolina and Virginia.
