He is Lord Peter Wimsey’s patient and always correct butler in the classic detective stories by Dorothy L. Sayers, and he also carries out with honour some scouting missions. He only loses his temper when the housekeeper washes the dusty, carefully stored bottles of port wine.

She has a similarly long-lasting yet ambivalent relationship with her future husband Matthew Cunliffe, who wants her to get a different job. Author Robert Galbraith (pseudonym for J.K. Rowling) reveals that Robin Ellacott has more than friendly feelings for Strike.

George Smiley

He is rather fat, has been said to liken a toad, and is married to the beautiful and forever unfaithful Lady Ann Sercombe. Besides which, George Smiley is a lethal agent with the British Secret Service in a suite of novels by John Le Carré. Before retiring, he also becomes the director of the secret service. In some of the early books, he is however more active as a detective.
