An investigating judge in the fictive little Belgian town Villette-sur-Meuse, where she lives with her husband, the Swedish Professor Thomas Héger, a specialist in Medieval History, and (eventually) their two children. Martine Poirot – the author Ingrid Hedström is very fond of whodunnnits à la Agatha Christie – is 34 years old when we meet her for the first time. She is attractive and picks her clothes carefully as well as being a skilful and stubborn crime investigator.

Private detective, who like his colleague Michelle Maxwell was dismissed from the Secret Service after failure as a bodyguard. He is a middle-aged man, with dark greying hair, tall and handsome, explains David Baldacci. Sean King has an easy-going relationship with former colleague Joan Dillinger, but he feels all the more attracted to his working partner Maxwell even though they are in many ways each other’s opposites.

Benny Griessel

He is a middle-aged detective with the Cape Town police, is of average height with greying untidy hair, a rugged face and a Slavic appearance. Benny Griessel does, however, have problems. He boozes – which is why his wife and their two children throw him out, and he finds a new partner. Her full name is Vesuvia Adelia Rachel Ortese Aguilar, she lives in the 12th century and is a doctor. She is sent from Sicily to England to assist in the investigation of the murder of a child, and solves the case. Afterwards, she reluctantly stays in the country. She is dark-blond, beautiful and slim, and the unmarried mother of daughter Allie whose father is a bishop, we are told by Ariana Franklin (pseudonym for Diana Norman).
