In the first book she has a relationship with a farmer, Edward Risberg. Following their reluctant separation, Lindell has a somewhat chaotic private life at the same time as she is highly efficient, creative and popular at work.

She is the protagonist in the prize-winning Garnethill trilogy by the Scottish crime writer Denise Mina. Young Maureen is a human wreck: sexually abused by her father, her mother an alcoholic, her brother a drug dealer.
