But Joseph (Joe) O'Loughlin has reason to be depressed: he has separated from his wife Julianne, who later dies, and he suffers from Parkinson’s disease. Nor is he handsome: he has a long, but pear-shaped nose, watery brown eyes and a pale complexion. He also becomes involved in several cases of severe crime in novels by Michael Robotham.

Robbie (Robert) Lewis

A jolly, patient and methodical detective sergeant in Oxford, who is the right hand and faithful companion of the somewhat gruffy Chief Inspector Morse in the crime novels by Colin Dexter. Lewis’ first name is rarely mentioned in the books, and in the TV series he is called Robbie. In the novels, he is happily married to Valerie and they have two children; in the later TV series, in which he is the main character, he is an older widower.

Robert Langdon

He was born in 1964 in the USA, has black hair, with blue slightly protruding eyes and a pale face. As a whole, art historian Robert Langdon is not exactly handsome – even though he has been compared with Harrison Ford – but he is a knowledgeable expert on symbols and the main character in a row of controversial novels by Dan Brown, where Langdon without hesitation questions Christian symbols and accepted religious history.

Bjørn Beltø

Norwegian archaeologist, who solves mysteries with religious connections in a suite of novels by Tom Egeland. Bjørn Beltø is just over 30 years old and is an albino, which means that he has poor vision and pale skin. He is single and finds it hard to get relationships to work, despite certain women being interested in him. He periodically suffers from anxiety, and then prefers to sit at home and listen to classical music.
