Embla Nystrom
Female
Former Nordic champion boxer (light welterweight), now a county police officer in the west of Sweden. She is about 30 years old and muscular, with curly reddish-brown hair and blue-green eyes in a somewhat round face: cute but not pretty, according to her creator Helene Tursten. Her mother is English, her father from Jamaica and she (Linda Martinez) is a police officer in Stockholm. She makes a quick career, and becomes the head of the investigative section. She was introduced in a TV series by Jan Guillou and Leif G.W. Persson in the 1990s, and has since then played a more or less large role in several of Persson’s books. She doesn’t like to talk about her private life, but she can be very blunt and direct, and likes strong beer.
-
Harry Hole
Male
Harry Hole is Jo Nesbø’s creation. Hole is immensely popular among readers even outside Nesbø’s native Norway. He is a police officer with a serious drinking problem and countless scars acquired in the line of duty. His methods are unconventional, he is headstrong and he is unpopular with both his superiors and his colleagues. The stories about him are more like hardboiled American thrillers than traditional detective stories.
