He works with Detective Chief Inspector Carol Jordan, and they have a complicated private relationship. Hill is sickly, sexually dysfunctional and there are details that mention an unhappy and mentally stressful childhood and youth.

He can’t be described as handsome, Chief Inspector Morten Dahl-Nielsen in Lund: a hunchbacked, somewhat overweight middle-aged man with hair that is thinning out more and more. And nor does he like his job, even though he is a clever and appreciated police detective. C.W. stands for Chauncey Wayne, but not many people know that. He is a private detective in Meriweather i Montana – where also author James Crumley’s other private detective, Milo Milodragovitch, is found. C.W. is a shabby war veteran and drug-abuser, always ready to resort to violence and he admits himself that he is “a mean son of a bitch”. He solves cases in his own way, is heavy-handed but effective.
