Author Stuart MacBride paints a picture of a dark and gloomy Aberdeen, where police detective Logan McRae investigates cases which include a lot of violence – sometimes against children. He, himself, has a background which is not entirely without blemishes, and sometimes he is wounded on duty or is transferred after breaking various rules. He is tired, often unshaven and a bit shabby-looking, but nevertheless has a permanent, if somewhat shaky, relationship with Samantha.

She has a shady past involving a different identity, which is yet to be revealed by the author, Sharon J. Bolton. Flint is a loner with a complex personality. She can at times feel afraid and abandoned at the same time as she is a brave and merciless woman … and she cannot be trusted.

The well-built Will Robie has sharp facial features, dark hair and a lot of scars on his torso and arms. A weak point, however, is his feelings for Jessica Reel, she too a notorious and effective US agent.

Police officer in Los Angeles in four of James Ellroy’s novels. Dudley Smith was born in Ireland, he is tall and broad shouldered, and goes all in brown, one could say: he has brown hair cut very short, brown eyes and he usually wears a shabby, brown suit. Few police officers in crime fiction have been described as so unsympathetic: he is an egoistic and violent bully and, it turns out, a murderer. And he is happy with that!
