A tall and slim police lieutenant in New York, the main character in a long suite of crime novels by J.D. Robb (pseudonym for Nora Roberts) set in the mid-21st century. Eve Dallas is of muscular build, has brown matted hair, whisky-coloured eyes and sharp facial features. She is tough and skilled in her job, and in her private life is married to businessman Roarke, who has a dubious background.

Author Pierre Lemaitre doesn’t make life easy for his middle-aged detective chief inspector, Camille Verhœven, in Paris. His pregnant wife is tortured to death in the first book: in the fourth book, his girlfriend Anne Forestier is almost killed in connection with a robbery. The short and entirely bald police officer, who isn’t always particularly sympathetic, solves the cases; then he resigns.

However, Fran finds herself in a murder mystery and meets police officer Jimmy Perez with whom she starts a relationship. Author Stuart MacBride paints a picture of a dark and gloomy Aberdeen, where police detective Logan McRae investigates cases which include a lot of violence – sometimes against children. He, himself, has a background which is not entirely without blemishes, and sometimes he is wounded on duty or is transferred after breaking various rules. He is tired, often unshaven and a bit shabby-looking, but nevertheless has a permanent, if somewhat shaky, relationship with Samantha.
