They neither can or want to admit that they are in love.

A friendly, calm and humorous police detective in Dublin, who leads the investigations into brutal murders in books by Jo Spain. He is between 40 and 50 years old, with a slightly crooked nose and black hair going grey, and he is happily married to Louise: they have a daughter together, Maria, who is not entirely without problems. Tom Reynolds’ personality is based on the author’s husband, Martin, who is a journalist, however, not a police officer.

Robert Langdon

He was born in 1964 in the USA, has black hair, with blue slightly protruding eyes and a pale face. As a whole, art historian Robert Langdon is not exactly handsome – even though he has been compared with Harrison Ford – but he is a knowledgeable expert on symbols and the main character in a row of controversial novels by Dan Brown, where Langdon without hesitation questions Christian symbols and accepted religious history.

But he is well aware of the city’s less savoury sides, and the memory of crimes he has investigated has meant that he chain-smokes and also drinks too much – which greatly upsets his Muslim wife Fatma. Together the couple have a lot of children and the number steadily grows in Barbara Nadel’s books about him.
