Perry Mason – known from the books by Erle Stanley Gardner – is probably the most famous defence lawyer of our time. He is obsessed with his job, but little is known about his private life, we do not even know what he looks like. He is unmarried, lives in an apartment and is an excellent driver. When he takes on a case, he does a great deal of criminal investigation of his own.

Jane Tennison
Female
A British police detective, originally the main character in a TV-series scripted by Lynda La Plante who wrote a handful of novels about her. On TV she was portrayed by Helen Mirren, and is thus described like her in the books: a middle-aged, well-groomed woman, who is also a tough and realistically portrayed police officer. Later, La Plante has written a series of novels that describe Tennison’s first years in the police force.

Andy Brazil
Male
When he appears for the first time, Andrew ”Andy” Brazil is 22 years old and an up and coming news reporter working with the police. In the second book he has been promoted to state trooper working closely together with the middle-aged chief of police, Judy Hammer. The books by the American author Patricia Cornwell are set in North Carolina and Virginia.

Annika Bengtzon
Female
Annika Bengtzon is the creation of the Swedish author and journalist Liza Marklund and possibly Sweden’s best-known journalist. She is married with two children, but she is also a highly competent crime reporter with a bad conscience on account of neglecting her family. Bengtzon is a complex woman who can be hard and tough one minute and reduced to tears the next. Nevertheless, she is portrayed as a highly capable modern professional woman.
