Malcolm Fox is a well-built and divorced middle-aged man, who worries about his father’s delicate health and his alcoholic sister – he, himself, has been a teetotaller for a long time. He works in Edinburgh, where he cooperates with another of author Ian Rankins’ main characters: John Rebus.

Andy (Andrew) Dalziel is uncouth, vulgar and loud at the same time as he is understanding and easily moved, which he does his best to hide from others. He is an experienced, effective Yorkshire inspector who solves a string of complex murders together with his colleague Peter Pascoe despite some health issues in later years. The books are by Reginald Hill.

Brannigan is a tough, quick-witted, independent woman with a great deal of integrity. She refuses to move in with her music journalist partner who lives next-door. She never gives up a case, not even when all the odds are against her.

When her parents have died, author Erica Falck travels home to Fjällbacka, and she remains there. She becomes involved in a murder mystery, and meets Detective Inspector Patrik Hedström with whom she gets married and they make a family. With her help, he contributes to solving a row of cases. She is described as ‘very pretty’, and her personality is partly based on Camilla Läckberg’s own.
