  • Gordianus

    Female

    He is called Gordianus the Finder, and is a private investigator in ancient Rome in the days of Julius Caesar. ‘Lawyers’ and orators like Cicero are some of the people who use his services in historical crime novels by Steven Saylor. Gordianus’ wife is the Egyptian Bethesda, previously his concubine whom he had bought as a slave. He lives in Rome until he inherits a farm in Etruria, but later moves back to the city.

  • Monika Pedersen

    Female

    There is a shortage of staff which means that the young, ambitious police constable Monika Pedersen gets a temporary position on the crime squad in Stockholm. She is single, likes her work, and eventually gets a permanent position. Later, she is overworked and seriously injured doing her job, and spends her free time investigating the circumstances around her mother’s death. Åsa Nilsonne has written five novels about her.

  • Zack (Zackarias) Herry

    Male

    A tragic childhood turned 27-year-old ‘Zack’ Herry into a split personality. When he was six years old, his mother was murdered. Now, in the daytime, he is an ambitious police detective in Stockholm, but at night he lives a crazy life with drugs and booze in illegal clubs. He is described as handsome, with blond hair, in good physical condition and the main character in the Hercules series by Mons Kallentoft, Markus Lutteman and Anna Karolina.

  • Peter Diamond

    Male

    Peter Diamond is a police officer, formerly stationed in London, and now working in Bath in Somerset. He is 50+, a widower and overweight with abominable dietary habits – ‘an ambulatory heart attack’, according to his creator Peter Lovesey. Already in the early books, Diamond left the police service, but returned after a couple of novels. Through his stubbornness and the way he ignores orders, he solves a number of sensitive cases.
