The English author Joyce Porter was born in Marple, Cheshire. She was educated at the High School for Girls in Macclesfield, Cheshire, 1933–42 and went on to study art at King’s College, London, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. After a couple of years of military service, she joined the Women’s Royal Air Force in 1949 where she, among other things, was an intelligence officer. She left the RAF in 1963 to become a fulltime writer. Her debut was Dover One (1964). Porter moved to Longbridge Deverill, near Westminster, Wiltshire, where she lived a secluded life together with her mother until her death from a virus on a flight back from China. She was unmarried with no children.
