British author born in Worcester Park, Surrey. In 1949, the family moved to Ealing and a year later to Banstead where he attended Beacon School until 1956 when he won a grant to Dulwich College, London. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Wadham College, Oxford, in 1967. He was a member of the Oxford University Dramatic Society, and while at Oxford he spent all his leisure time performing on stage and writing plays. He was scouted by the BBC, who offered him in-house training as a radio producer directly after his graduation. In 1971, he married the BBC producer Lucy McLaren; the couple had three children together. Between 1977 and 1979, Brett worked as a producer for BBC television. He then began to write full time, although he continued to produce plays for BBC radio. He now lives with his family in Burtham near Arundel, West Sussex.
